Lewis Hamilton win the Monaco grand prix in mixed conditions ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Force India’s Sergio Perez as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crashes out.
Verstappen and Nasr starting in pit lane
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sauber’s Felipe Nasr will start from the pit lane. Nasr’s engine blew up in the early part of Q1 and then Verstappen crashed close to the end of the first session. Verstappen has also been given a new chassis by Red Bull for the race.
Safety car start
As the forecast predicted, it’s raining and it will be a Safety car start so all the drivers will start on the Wet tyres according to the rules.
The order of the grid in unchanged behind the Safety car with Daniel Ricciardo leads ahead of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Torro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat is coasting round the track and pulls into the pits. The team change his steering wheel and his is back out on the track but 1 lap down. Kvyat then drivers through the pits again and his engine sounds better now. Lap 6, drivers are reporting that the track is drying and the result of this is less spray.
Lap 7, the Safety car is in this lap and we are about to get racing. Just as the Safety car pulls into the pits and the racing gets under way, Renault’s Jolyon Palmer loses the car under acceleration on the pit straight and the car veers left and into the barrier. He skates uncontrollably down the barrier and ploughs into turn 1. The Virtual Safety car is out and lasts till lap 10.
Lap 11, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen locks up and loses his front wing at turn 6 and carries on with his front wing under his car! He goes slowly in the tunnel and pulls in the run off area at turn 10. That is the end of his race.
Lap 13, Nico Rosberg is struggling to get his tyres up to temperature and is falling behind race leader, Daniel Ricciardo at a rate of 1 and a half seconds per lap and Lewis Hamilton is right behind and is looking for an overtake. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel pulls into the pits and goes onto the Intermediate tyres. Lap 14, Ricciardo now has a 10 second gap to Rosberg who is still falling back. Lap 16, Hamilton has now passed Rosberg and is up to 2nd place.! It looks like Rosberg got off the power and let Hamilton through. Team orders at play? At the end of lap 20, the struggling Rosberg pits for the Intermediate tyre.
Lap 21, Daniil Kvyat and Kevin Magnussen are in the wall at turn 18. Looks like Kvyat went for an overtake and both just stopped in time before hitting the wall and losing their front wings. Both continue. Lap 23, Daniel Ricciardo pits from the lead and puts on the Intermediate tyre. Nearly all of the grid are on the Inters. Lap 28, Ricciardo has now caught up to Hamilton in front. Ricciardo has been super quick on the new set of tyres and has now caught up to Hamilton who has not stopped.
The sun is out and slowly the track is drying. Time for the dry compound tyre? Yes, it looks like that as Marcus Ericsson, Sergio Perez and Jenson Button pit for the Ultrasoft, Soft and Soft tyres. This has set off a change reaction as the next lap Lewis Hamilton, Valterri Bottas, Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel pit for the Ultrasoft, Supersoft, Ultrasoft and Soft tyres.
The next lap, race leader Daniel Ricciardo pits and his crew are not ready for him! He is sitting there on the jack while his team slowly bring out the tyres! They finally get the Supersoft tyres on and get going. Surely, that costly mistake has lost him the victory again!
Lap 35, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crashes again this weekend. This time at turn 3 and the Virtual Safety car is deployed. It ends on lap 37 as Verstappen’s car is removed. Lewis Hamilton leads ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Jenson Button and Esteban Gutierrez. Drivers on the Soft tyres can go to the end of the race but can the driver’s on the Ultrasoft tyres make it to the end?
Lap 42, Sergio Perez in 3rd place is going really quickly and is fastest than Hamilton and Ricciardo and is slowly catching them and dragging Sebastian Vettel along with him. Lap 50, both Sauber drivers of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson clash at turn 19. Ericsson goes up the inside of Nasr and spins. Ericsson loses his front wing and pits. Nasr was told by the team a couple of laps ago that Ericsson was quicker and that he was told to let Ericsson through. Nasr retires on lap 54 with Ericsson retiring on lap 55. Lewis Hamilton wins the Monaco GP ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez.
