Italian Race Round 14

Nico Rosberg wins the Italian GP ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel as Rosberg narrows the championship gap to Hamilton to 2 points.


Tyre choice

Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa, Pascal Wehrlein, Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean, Felipe Nasr, Marcus Ericsson and Jolyon Palmer will start on the Soft tyre. Esteban Ocon will be the only one on the Medium tyre with the rest of the grid on the Supersoft tyre.


The lights go green and Nico Rosberg gets a great start and leads. Lewis Hamilton gets a poor start and gets jumped by Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo to 6th place at the end of the first lap. Lap 2, Hamilton piles the pressure on Ricciardo into turn 1 but Hamilton gets the better exit and overtakes into turn 4.

Jolyon Palmer and Felipe Nasr clash at the exit of turn 2 and both have a heavy amount of damage. At the end of lap 2, Palmer pits for a new front wing and Nasr limps back to the pits as well. Max Verstappen also got a bad start and dropped from 7th to 11th. Lap 8, Verstappen overtakes Fernando Alonso into turn 1 and up into 9th place. Lap 9, Renault retire Jolyon Palmer from the race. Lap 11, Lewis Hamilton overtakes Valterri Bottas into turn 1 for 4th place.

Lap 14, Valterri Bottas, Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso pit and all three of them go onto Soft tyre. Lap 15, Kimi Raikkonen, Sergio Perez and Jenson Button pit and go onto the Supersoft, Soft and Soft tyres. Lap 17, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Massa pit and go onto the Supersoft, Soft and Soft tyre. With Raikkonen and Vettel on the Supersoft tyre, this confirms that they are both doing a 2 stop strategy.

Lap 25, race leader, Nico Rosberg finally pits and switches to the Medium tyre. At the end of lap 25, Lewis Hamilton pits and also goes onto the Medium tyre. Lap 28, Pascal Wehrlein pulls off the track at turn 1 and is out of the race. Lap 31, Valterri Bottas pits and goes onto the Soft tyre. Lap 34, Sebastian Vettel makes his final stop of the day and goes onto the Soft tyre till the end of the race. Lap 35, Kimi Raikkonen is next to make his final stop and goes onto the Soft tyre. Lap 36, Max Verstappen pits and switches to the Soft tyre.

Lap 39, Daniel Ricciardo pits and switches to the Supersoft tyre and immediately starts hunting down Valtteri Bottas. Torro Rosso decide to retire Daniil Kvyat from the race just in time as well as Kvyat got a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Lap 45, Jenson Button overtakes team-mate Fernando Alonso into turn 1 and is up into 12th place. Lap 47, after 6 laps, Daniel Ricciardo overtakes Valterri Bottas into turn 1 and both are side by side. Ricciardo is on the outside and gets amazing traction and is ahead on the exit of turn 2. Lap 53, Nico Rosberg wins ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Race stats

  •  Winning in Monza today was Nico Rosberg’s 7th win of the season and his 21st career victory. It was also his 50th podium appearance and the win today put Rosberg only 2 points behind Lewis Hamilton.
  • Sebastian Vettel’s 3rd place was his and Ferrari’s first podium in 5 races.
  • Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap of the race of a 1:25:340. It was his first fastest lap time since Abu Dhabi 2013 and his 22nd overall.
  • Williams were able to claim back 4th place from Force India.
