There’s only been two occasions where Lewis Hamilton has not been on the top step of the podium and that has resulted into a 10 point lead over Mercedes team-mate Valterri Bottas while a double points finish for Renault lifts them to 5th.
The points system Formula One currently uses has been used since 2010 allows for the top 10 finishers to claim points and as follows: 1st – 25pts, 2nd – 18pts, 3rd – 15pts, 4th – 12pts, 5th – 10pts, 6th – 8pts, 7th – 6pts, 8th – 4pts, 9th – 2pts and 10th – 1pt.
The points system used in Formula One between 2003 to 2009 was as follows: 1st – 10pts, 2nd – 8pts, 3rd – 6pts, 4th – 5pts, 5th – 4pts, 6th – 3pts, 7th – 2pts and 8th – 1pt.

Hamilton over a win clear at the top
Mercedes Lewis Hamilton moves further ahead of his team-mate, Valterri Bottas, at the top of the championship with a lead of 11 points. 5 victories and in those two races in which he didn’t win, he finished right behind Bottas to minimise the points difference. With a maximum of 70 points up for grabs so far this season, the 5 Time World Champion took a tally of 66 points. Impressive stuff!
Ricciardo moves into the top 10
By finishing in 6th, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, added 3 points to his 2 points scored at the Chinese GP to move into the top 10. McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr leads the mid-field pack on 6 points in 7th with Haas’s Kevin Magnussen and Ricciardo on 5 points each. McLaren’s Lando Norris completes the top 10 with 4 points although the Brit is level on points with Racing Point of Sergio Perez and the other Renault of Nico Hulkenberg.
Mercedes extend their advantage at the top
In this points system, 50 points is a huge lead. That’s the points lead Mercedes have over Ferrari. Five consecutive 1-2 finishes out of seven races along with 16 points in Monaco and 15 in Canada has resulted in Mercedes in the German team taking 121 points. 2nd place Ferrari, on 71 points, are 23 points ahead of Red Bull. McLaren in 4th on 10 points are one ahead of Renault in 5th. Williams are the only team left to score points in 10th.
