Race

Ahead of today’s race, Lewis Hamilton could become the most successful driver round here if he wins here for a 6th time. It was an incredibly close qualifying session with Valterri Bottas edging out team-mate Hamilton for Pole. On the grid, it’s a late rear wing change for Max Verstappen as his Red Bull mechanics change an end-plate.

The lights go out and it is a good start by Valterri Bottas to lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo battle for 7th with the McLaren driver coming out on top. Onto lap 2, a poor exit out of the final corner allow Hamilton to close into Bottas. It’s been a disaster start for Haas with Romain Grosjean and  Kevin Magnussen pitting at the end of lap 1 after the pair touched.

It’s been a good start by McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr who overtaken by Alfa Romeo drivers to move up into 11th. It’s been confirmed that both Haas drivers sustained punctures after they banged tyres. Lewis Hamilton challenges Valterri Bottas into Stowe with Hamilton going down the inside of turn 6. Hamilton nips past but Bottas fights back going side-by-side into turn 9. Bottas nips ahead and regains the lead. What a fight!

Onto lap 5, Valterri Bottas leads by 1 second ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly. The top 6 are pulling away from the chasing pack led by Lando Norris. Lap 8, Haas decide to retire Kevin Magnussen from the race. The Dane had already been lapped after his early trip through the pits. The gap between the two Mercedes drivers is less than a second as Leclerc’s Soft tyre are starting to wear out. Verstappen now pressures Leclerc but Verstappen has to get out of the move and that allows Vettel to pressure the Dutchman.

Into turn 3, Pierre Gasly overtakes Sebastian Vettel for 5th and defends well into turn 6 to stay ahead of the Ferrari driver. Lap 13, Gasly pits. He goes onto the Hard tyre and rejoins in 10th as Daniel Ricciardo for Renault also pits. Ricciardo comes out in 15th. Lap 14, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen both pit at the same time. Both go onto the Medium tyre and Verstappen rejoins ahead of the Ferrari driver. Verstappen runs wide into turn 4 and that allows Leclerc through. Importantly, they rejoined ahead of Gasly. This pit-stop means that Verstappen will have to pit again later in this race. Romain Grosjean also retires from the race making it a double-retirement for Haas.

Lando Norris also pitted and rejoined in 12th, behind Daniel Ricciardo who was running behind Norris before the pitstops. Lap 16, Valterri Bottas leads Lewis Hamilton by 1.2 seconds as Charles Leclerc once again defends brilliantly against Max Verstappen. Lap 17, Bottas pits. He goes onto the Medium and will have to pit again in this race. The Finn rejoins in 3rd nearly 9 seconds ahead of the Leclerc/Verstappen fight. This is an epic battle, Verstappen dived down the inside of Stowe but Leclerc manages to stay ahead. Lap 20, Antonio Giovinazzi has spun and into turn 16 and the Safety Car has been deployed.

The Alfa Romeo driver is beached in the gravel and Lewis Hamilton pits under the Safety Car. Hamilton rejoins in 1st with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen also pitting. All go onto the Hard tyre and now behind the Safety Car, Hamilton leads ahead of Valterri Bottas, Vettel, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly and Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo also pitted again and has rejoined in 11th. Ferrari decide that behind the Safety Car to pit Leclerc. He goes onto the Hard tyre but drops behind Gasly and Verstappen. Carlos Sainz Jr is a big gainer from the Safety Car as he hadn’t pitted yet and now after his pit-stop, he now runs in 7th.

Still behind the Safety Car, Valterri Bottas’s chances of winning this race are decreasing as he will have to pit again with the other drivers around him not having to pit again. Racing resumes on lap 24 with Lewis Hamilton leading the field. On the Safety Car restart, Sergio Perez tries to overtake Nico Hulkenberg but has broken his front wing. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen do battle once again with Verstappen staying ahead for now.

After pitting, Sergio Perez rejoins the race in 17th as Nico Hulkenberg seems to have survived the failed overtake and is in 12th. Lap 27, Pierre Gasly allows Max Verstappen through into 4th place releasing the Dutchman to chase down Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton leads by 2 seconds ahead of Valterri Bottas. Lap 35, Max Verstappen is chasing Sebastian Vettel for 3rd while Charles Leclerc is chasing down Pierre Gasly for 5th and a clean move round the outside of turn 3 gives Leclerc 5th place. Lando Norris pits for a second time this race and rejoins in 14th.

Going round the outside of Stowe, Max Verstappen overtakes Sebastian Vettel but the Ferrari driver tries to comeback into turn 16 but there’s contact! Sweeping back behind the Red Bull, the Ferrari loses a huge amount of downforce, hits the rear of the Red Bull and both end up in the gravel. Both are able to continue but Vettel’s going slowly. He pits for a new front wing as the incident is under investigation. Vettel goes onto the Medium tyre and rejoins in 17th. Due to the incident, Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly have moved up to 3rd and 4th with Verstappen in 5th.

Lap 41, Lewis Hamilton leads ahead of Valterri Bottas, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz Jr, Daniel Ricciardo, Alexander Albon, Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Hulkenberg. Lap 44, the Stewards award Sebastian Vettel a 10 second time penalty for the collision as Sainz defends 6th from Ricciardo. Lap 45, Bottas pits for the second time this race. He goes onto the Soft tyre and rejoins in 2nd. Lap 48, Bottas sets the fastest lap of the race and has the pace to catch Hamilton. Hamilton’s vying with the idea of pitting.

The gap is staying the same, there’s no need for Lewis Hamilton to worry. Onto the final lap, Hamilton is on his way to a 6th win at Silverstone. He crosses the line to win the British GP and sets the fastest lap on the final lap. What a performance. Valterri Bottas and Charles Leclerc round out the podium.
